Due to the highly unpredictable security situation in Iran, residents should avoid all travel to the country. Those already there should attend to personal safety and leave or relocate to relatively safe regions immediately. Residents in Iran who need assistance may call the 24-hour hotline of the Assistance to Hong Kong Residents Unit of the Immigration Department at (852) 1868, call the 1868 hotline using network data or use the 1868 Chatbot via the Immigration Department Mobile Application, send message to the 1868 WhatsApp assistance hotline, send message to the 1868 WeChat assistance hotline or submit the Online Assistance Request Form, or contact the Chinese Embassy / Consulate-General in Iran at consular protection hotline: (Embassy – (98) 9122176035, Consulate-General in Bandar Abbas – (98) 9914240393).

- Since early March 2026, due to ongoing military conflict between Iran and Israel, the airspace of Iran has remained close, causing temporary closure of airports and disrupting air traffic.
- On 28 February 2026, tensions in the Middle East have escalated. Air strikes have occurred in multiple cities including the capital Tehran and Minab in Hormozgan province, resulting in serious casualties.
- Since late December 2025, protests and violent clashes have occurred across Iran, resulting in casualties.
- On 13 June 2025, air strikes occurred in multiple cities including the capital Tehran and Natanz in Isfahan province, resulting in casualties.
- On 3 January 2024, bomb attacks occurred in the southeastern city of Kerman, resulting in serious casualties.
- Since late September 2022, demonstrations have occurred across the country including in Tehran.
- On 8 January 2020, there were reports of Iran firing missiles against two U.S. military bases in Iraq. Tensions in the area may escalate rapidly.
- On 3 January 2020, an Iranian military commander was killed in a U.S. airstrike in Iraq. The incident led to increased tensions in the region.
- On 14 February 2019, an explosion occurred in Sistan-Baluchestan, resulting in casualties.
- On 6 December 2018, an explosion occurred in Chabahar of Southern Iran, resulting in casualties.
- On 22 September 2018, a gun attack occurred in Ahvaz of southwestern Iran, resulting in serious casualties.
- On 30 June and 1 July 2018, demonstrations turned into clashes with police forces in the Southwest Iran, resulting in injuries.
- Since late December 2017, large scale demonstrations have occurred across the country, resulting in casualties.
- On 7 June 2017, shooting attacks occurred in Tehran, resulting in casualties.
- Regional security issues persist. Clashes are affecting the borders with Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan from time to time.
- In mid-February 2011, anti-government demonstrations occurred in Tehran.
- In September 2010, bombings occurred in the border areas of Sistan-Baluchestan and West Azerbaijan provinces.

Registration for Outbound Travel Information (ROTI)
Before departing Hong Kong, residents may register via ROTI their travel itineraries and contact details to receive updates on OTA and related information. The Immigration Department may contact and assist the registrants in an emergency.
