- The World Health Organization (WHO) declared on 17 May 2026 that the epidemic of Ebola disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The number of confirmed and suspected cases in the affected areas continues to rise. The WHO has assessed that the actual scale of the outbreak may be significantly larger than what is currently being detected and reported, with a significant risk of regional spread. The epidemic has spread to multiple provinces in the DRC as well as to Uganda. In addition, intensifying conflict in Ituri Province of the DRC has displaced a large number of people, further increasing the risk of disease transmission.
