Project Gemstone


Yau Tsim Police District has rolled out a youth project for Junior Police Call (JPC) members of Ethnic Minorities (EM) called “Project GEMSTONE”since February 2013 with the objective of enhancing the Chinese language proficiency of EM youths, particularly those who have interest to join the Police Force or the Civil Service.

  • Every Saturday, Chinese tutorial classes are provided to the EM students by a qualified Chinese teacher. On top of the language classes, Police volunteers from Yau Tsim Police District, mentors of the students, organize activities such as group discussion, role-play, visit to police premises etc, to better equip them with better police knowledge and broaden their horizons.

  • Currently, there are around 40 Yau Tsim Police Volunteers having joined this project to assist the Gemstone students. The project is absolutely free of charge! In recognition of its contribution in promoting racial harmony, ‘Project Gemstone’ has won numerous local awards as follows :

    • Civil Service Bureau - Gold Prize of the Civil Service Outstanding Service Award Scheme (specialized Service)
    • Service Quality Wing of Hong Kong Police Force - Service Quality Award Scheme
    • Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile - Rotary Club Award - Excellence Vocational Awards
    • India Club - India Awards
  • As at June 2017, there are more than 10 students having joined the Force, or other disciplinary services, through "Project GEMSTONE".
